Gamification

Hi,

All of us know what is gamification and all the advantages that this methodology has.
Today, I will show you a game, Jenga, that is very common nowadays.

With this original game, students can learn the magnitudes in a fun and attractive way. So we can apply the gamification in the class.
I think gamification is an interesting methodology, because the students learn through games and it is more motivating for them. If students are motivated, they achieve a real and significant learning.

In the next video is explained the rules of the game.

PHYSICAL AND SOCIAL MEASUREMENT

Hello everyone,
some days ago I created a Piktochart about Physical and Social Measurement. It is summarized a lot of contents related with this theme and I would like to share my work with you.

If you are interested on it, please click here

Probability: didactic unit

HELLO,
Today you're in luck because I'm going to share with you an incredible resource that you could use with your students in the future!

It is a didactic unit that works the probability, and is oriented to students of fifth stage of primary education. There are many activities, and all of them are very visual. It treats many concepts and contents related to the topic.
I would apply it in class inventing a game, in which the children have to pass different levels through the different activities.

If you want the link of this didactic unit, click here

You can see some examples of the actitivies:

Flipped Classroom Model

I have already talked about this model in other blogs and websites, but I expose it again because it is very interesting: the Flipped Classroom Model.
It is an innovative model that can be applied in any area and stage of primary education.

You know that a visual explanation is clearer than simple words, so I'm going to share this video with you. It explains in detail the characteristics of this model.

As future teachers we have to consider this type of model because it has a lot of advantages, some of them are the following:
- It turns students into protagonists of their own learning
- There is more time to resolve doubts and consolidate knowledge in class
- It allows to attend the diversity of the classroom because students can spend as much time as they need to review the contents, to make sure that they understand them correctly...

about mathematics

In this post I'm going to share two videos about mathematics. Eduardo Saenz is a mathematician, he talks in the two videos, one is about the importance of mathematics in real life and the other one is an story about teacher and problems.

In this first video throughout a story of his own, he shows us two learnings for life:
- A problem is a opportunity to learn something
- There are many ways to get the solution of a problem
He also says that a good teacher is for life, and a teacher has to be in continuous training.

In the second video he talks about the importance of mathematics. He shows examples and demonstrations to support what he says.

With these two videos, I want to transmit the idea that we have to be aware of the importance of mathematics in our day to day. Also, to be conscious of our responsibility as future teachers to make our future students know that importance.

APPS FOR MEASUREMENT

I would like to show you four interesting apps destined to improve the term of measurement in class. As teachers we have to use new technologies in class, because nowadays we are surrounded by them!!

  • Geoboard (iOS y web)

This app is oriented to geometry. It is like a virtual geoplane: with a set of ropes which you can form different polygons. With it you can calculate areas and lengths.

  • Cambio de Unidades con la Srta. Athenea (Android)
In this app what is supposed to do is to practice the measurement units through ordening measures (comparisons), operating (pass to the indicated unit), etc.

  • Rey de las matemáticas (iOS y Android)
Student in this app, has to imagine that s/he is a farmer, who has to solve different mathematics problems and challenges in order to be a king. It contains a lot of levels and the theme is very interesting so the app could be addictive and very educative.

  • Télemetro (Android)
This Télemetro measures the distance and height of a target object by trigonometry.

PROBABILITY

Hi everyone!

This post will address one of the main topics of the measure: probability. This concept is not taught in depth in primary education, but it is important to keep it in mind.

Firstly, I show you a video that explain in a simple way the meaning of probability. It has some explanations with a lot of examples.

On the other hand, I would like to share with you another video. It is a game related with that concept. It is a simple game so we can apply it with our students in class. You only need dies and little balls!

CUENTAMATES, an useful game

Today I show you an interesting and fun game, CUENTAMATES, to apply in the classroom with the little ones. I found it on the website of @profesorademates. It is a game related with mathematics but which includes other subjects in an indirect way.

To play, you only need some boards (click here to print it), a die and a tile for each student.

With this game, we develop a lot of contents: attention, memory, even and odd numbers, oral expression, imagination, laterality: right and left, geometrical figures, concentration, vobulary in other languages, animals' classification, healthy food...
The rules of the game are in the same page of the boards.

This is an example of a board:

How Do You Measure Up

HELLO!

Today I'm going to show you an interesting video about measure learning. The video shows a game called "How do you measure up". It is in English.

This video is about the measuring in real life. Also it appears a lot of definitions about measurement (weight, speed,...) which are adapted to the first levels of the school.

mathematics in social networks

Hey!

Today I'm going to show you some Instagram profiles that belong to teachers of primary education, who share the resources they use daily in their classroom.
I think this post is quite useful since today all of us manage social networks and it is interesting to follow what we can learn a lot.

My favourite profile of Instagram related to the measurement is: @profesorademates (click here). It is a teacher who share a lot of activities and resources that she use in her class.

In addition, we have: @unprofeconclase (click here), @laclasedebenitoybego (click here) and @recursosaula (click here). They are three profiles of Instagram too. They are more general, not only about measurement. They have material about other subjects too, but they are very interesting because the teachers of these profiles belongs to different stages of primary education so we can find resources of measurement to all the courses.

To conclude, I want to say that all of these teachers use an active and innovative methodology so all of their activities are creative and original.

(If you know other profiles, please tell me in the comments)

getting started in the learning of the lenght

Hello everyone!

Today, I want to share with you a video related to the initiation to lenght measurements. Two teachers present a resource they use with children of fourth year (pre-school education), so it is initiation.

I think it is very interesting because with only one resource they work a lot of diferent definitions and characteristics of lenght, like horizontal, vertical, diagonal, small, big, medium-sized, the order,...
In this topic students often have many errors, so it is essential to work with different games and visual materials, so that when they learn new concepts are not confused.

Why that title?

HELLO EVERYONE!!!!

I want to release this blog explaning the meaning of the title I have chosen - LEARNING MEASUREMENT by doing.

First of all, "learning measurement".  I think it is quite clear, in each of the publications I am going to talk about any topic related to teaching-learning of the measure in primary education (methodologies, games, tools,...), and also of other aspects about the measuring.

For the other hand, why "by doing"????? well, Learning by doing is a kind of method that basically consist of learning by doing. It means that learning must be practical and relevant (based on experiences), not passive and theoretical. I think the measurement is an area that can be very related with this approach, so in my publications I am going to forget the traditional methodology and to talk about this alternative one.
